'The only system of thought into which Jesus Christ will fit is the one in which He is the starting point.' (Athanasius)

Theology with Christ at the centre- and the start
Grünewald's The Crucifixion features John the Baptist (on the right hand side) pointing at Jesus on the cross, saying 'He must increase, I must decrease'. His whole ministry was about pointing to Christ, and introducing people to him. That not only sums-up John's ministry, but also the whole work of scripture and the mission of the Church.

This website is dedicated to ways of thinking about God that begin not with human logic, but with the Logos, Jesus Christ. If we try and do theology that has a starting point other than him, it will lead only to confusion, idolatry, and false religion- no matter how reasonable it seems to us.

To attempt to speak about 'God' without beginning at the eternal Son is to imagine a different god to the the LORD of Israel, the God of the Bible, the only true God. John 1v18 claims that 'No one has ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is at the Father's side, has made Him known'. John is telling us that the Logos (the Word of God) has always been Mediator between the Father and human beings. Even before His Incarnation as Yeshua of Nazareth, Jesus the Messiah has been the only possible point of access to the Living God, the only One in whom salvation has been made available to the world.

'All the prophets testify about Him, that everyone who believes in Him receives forgiveness of sins.'
Acts 10v43

'... apart from Christ the saving knowledge of God does not stand. From the beginning of the world he was consequently set before all the elect that they should look unto him and put their trust in him.'
John Calvin Institutes, II.vi.4

Since He is the only way to know God and know about God, the Lord Jesus should be not only the centre of our theology, but also its starting point. Theologians and philosophers can dream up all sorts of divine characteristics, systems, and ideas, but unless their theology is driven by God's own self-revelation their efforts are doomed to fail. It ought to be no surprise to Christian people that true theology takes our own dear Jesus as its Alpha and Omega- its beginning and end, start and goal.

This website
The Breeze of the Centuries is my blog which is quite varied, but tends to keep coming back to historical theology and Church history. Every age has its own biases and particular idolatries, and spending some time with those who've gone before can often help us seek and destory our cultural and historical blind spots. I've found that doing a little historical theology is not only healthy for doing Christ-centred theology, but it's also great fun!

The resources section lists websites, articles sermons, and other stuff that should help us in doing Christ-centred theology. This section will, of course, be ever-expanding. Enjoy!
